Substance Abuse Stats in Richmond, KY

Did you know that Richmond has a drug overdose problem that it’s tackling full force? In 2019, Madison County had the biggest decrease in overdose deaths in the entire state!

Just a year before, a state report found that Madison County:

This is promising progress! But it’s not time to relax yet—the Kentucky Chamber is working overtime to keep reducing substance abuse stats in Richmond and elsewhere.

Choosing Between an Outpatient and Inpatient Rehab

The best kind of rehab in Richmond is different for each client. The two main kinds are inpatient and outpatient rehab.

Inpatient rehab is a live-in treatment with round-the-clock care. You’ll have 24/7 access to client care and engage in activities that help you toward recovery.

Outpatient rehab allows you to go to treatment part-time. You may have treatment sessions daily or a few times a week.

Some clients start with inpatient and then continue recovery with outpatient rehab. There’s no right or wrong!

How Long Can Treatment at a Rehab Last?

The length of treatment depends on factors that include:

  • The drugs you’re stopping
  • Prescription drugs you use
  • Your drug use history
  • Your health and metabolism

Research shows that three months of treatment is the shortest effective period. When you go to rehab for less than three months, you increase your risk of relapse.

Opioid abuse recovery is an exception. Treatment for opioid abuse should last at least 12 months. That sounds like a long time, but you won’t heal overnight!

What to Expect at Rehab

Not sure what happens at rehab? You’re not alone.

It’s hard to predict a rehab experience because they’re so different, but yours could include:

  • Daily check-ins: Regular appointments help keep you on track and accountable.
  • Medication: Suboxone is a drug sometimes used to control opioid and alcohol cravings. It’s not an option for everyone but it can be very effective.
  • Symptom management: If you have long-term withdrawal symptoms, then you’ll receive help managing them.
  • Therapy: Group therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy are two staples of recovery.

When Would You Need to Go to Detox?

If your care team tells you that you need detox, it’s important to go! The signs that you need detox could include:

  • Addiction or dependence
  • History of relapse
  • Personal problems from using drugs but no ability to stop using drugs
  • Trouble stopping even when you don’t want to use drugs

You could have dependence if you have physical symptoms when you try to stop using drugs. The symptoms include muscle cramps, headache, diarrhea, and even seizures.

How Long is Detox?

The length of detox in Richmond depends on:

  • The drugs you’re stopping
  • Your drug use history
  • Your health history, which can include factors like your weight, history of kidney disease, or history of addiction

You can’t control these factors or speed up detox. Detox can last a few days for some people and several weeks for others. Detox programs are available ranging from three days up to 21 days and longer.

Your care team will let you know what to expect from your detox in terms of length.
