Choosing Between an Outpatient and Inpatient Rehab

Before you can enter rehab, you’ll have to decide whether to go to inpatient or outpatient. The main differences are:

  • Inpatient rehab requires that you live at the treatment center. You’ll be busy with therapies, treatments, and activities all day long. This intensive approach helps recovery to “stick.”
  • Outpatient rehab lets you live at home and go to treatment when you can. You’ll need to attend daily or regularly-scheduled appointments. Those can include therapy, group sessions, check-ins, or drug tests.

How Long Can Treatment at a Rehab Last?

You choose the length of treatment, but research shows that it’s best to go to treatment for at least three months.

That sounds like a big time commitment! However, staying in treatment for longer significantly improves your outcome. It’s worth the extra time in rehab, where you’ll learn coping strategies that help you for the rest of your life.

If you can manage to stay in treatment for longer, go for it! Some clients keep going to treatment for months or even years past their graduation date.

What to Expect at Rehab

At rehab, you can expect to stay busy! A typical day in rehab includes

  • Activities
  • Check-ins with care staff
  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy

If you leave rehab or go to outpatient rehab, then drug tests can be part of your routine too. They can be random or scheduled.

Additionally, some clients are eligible for medications like Suboxone. These medications help curb long-term withdrawal in alcohol or opioid recovery. Not every client is a good fit for medication, so ask your care team if it’s right for you.

When Would You Need to Go to Detox?

You should go to detox if you’re addicted to drugs. Addiction causes withdrawal to happen when you stop using. Withdrawal can be uncomfortable enough to cause relapse.

The signs of withdrawal include:

  • Agitation
  • Cravings
  • Diarrhea
  • Muscle cramps
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Vomiting

Detox helps you get through the worst of these symptoms in comfort. Then you can enter rehab fresh and ready to recover. If you need to attend detox, your care team will let you know before you enter rehab.

How Long is Detox?

The length of detox can vary from a few days to a few weeks.

The most common rehab programs are five-day, seven-day, and 14-day detox. Some centers offer three- or 21-day detox in addition to those.

If you’re not sure which choice is right for you, ask your care team. They’ll take your history and help you choose a program length based on:

  • Your drug use history
  • Your medical history
  • Your history of relapse
