Substance Abuse Stats in Parkersburg, WV

How much do you know about substance abuse in Parkersburg and its home county?

Like much of West Virginia, the area is plagued with opioids. In 2017, Wood County was designated a High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area.

More people die from opioid overdoses in Wood County than in the entire United States or West Virginia.

In 2016, 60 people died from drug overdoses. That’s an overdose mortality rate of 23 per 100,000 people.

Choosing Between an Outpatient and Inpatient Rehab

Inpatient rehab is the treatment of choice for most clients. If you need extra stability and structure during recovery, then inpatient rehab is here for you.

Outpatient rehab is a good alternative if you can’t go to inpatient. Outpatient rehab lets you attend treatment part-time. You can keep living at home, going to school, or working.

However, outpatient rehab requires that you have some stability. It’s not the right choice for every client. Talk to your care team about choosing the right kind of rehab.

How Long Can Treatment at a Rehab Last?

Treatment should last as long as it needs to. At a minimum, you should go to rehab for 3 months or longer. That’s because treatments of less than 3 months don’t decrease your risk of relapse.

Addiction is a chronic disease and it needs long-term treatment. Go to rehab for as long as your care team recommends. Be open to additional rehab stays. Many people keep going to outpatient rehab for months or years after their inpatient stay!

What to Expect at Rehab

Expect to stay busy with treatments and activities while you’re in rehab. Some evidence-based treatments include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy: This kind of treatment teaches you better awareness of how your thoughts affect your behavior. That includes drug use behavior.
  • Medication-assisted treatment: Some clients can use MAT to help with cravings. This includes clients who are getting opioid and alcohol treatment.

You’ll spend time in therapeutic activities too. These can include yoga, equine therapy, or art therapy.

When Would You Need to Go to Detox?

You should go to detox if your care team recommends it. You’ll probably be asked to go to detox if you:

  • Are addicted to any drug
  • Have a history of alcohol or opioid abuse
  • Have a history of benzodiazepine abuse
  • Have a history of relapse

These factors mean that you’re more likely to experience a relapse during withdrawal.

How Long is Detox?

Not sure how long your detox period should last? Don’t worry too much because your care team will help you choose the right detox length.

Most detox programs last 3 to 7 days. It’s rare for detox to last longer than 14 days. Still, in some cases, your care team may recommend an extended stay.

You’re more likely to need an extended stay if you:

  • Have a history of relapse
  • Have life-threatening alcohol withdrawal
  • Have a complicated drug abuse history
  • Have a history of abusing benzos or opioids
