  • Shelby County recorded a total of 208 deaths due to drug overdose in 2017.

Choosing Between an Outpatient and Inpatient Rehab

The highest level of care available for clients battling substance abuse is inpatient rehab. This is the only type of program that will offer support at all times during recovery.

Outpatient rehab is ideal for patients who have already completed an inpatient program, as well as for those that can’t attend an outpatient program for logistical reasons.

If you are not sure which of these program structures is best for you, talk to your care team for guidance.

How Long Can Treatment at a Rehab Last?

The length of different rehab programs varies considerably, with some programs lasting only a couple weeks and others lasting for a year or more. In general, it is best to choose a program that lasts for at least three months.

Studies on addiction recovery have shown that success rates are highest when clients remain in rehab for a minimum of 90 days.

Keep in mind that this is only the minimum recommendation. You may choose to remain in treatment much longer.

What to Expect at Rehab

Every rehab program utilizes its own approach to treatment. In many cases, programs are also customized based on client characteristics. However, most rehab programs include some of the same basic services, such as psychotherapy, counseling, behavioral therapy, medication and support group meetings.

Most programs will require you to follow a structured schedule during treatment. In addition to participating in standard services, you may also have scheduled times for recreation or alternative therapies.

When Would You Need to Go to Detox?

Before you can begin a rehab program, you must withdraw from drugs. This is one of the most difficult parts of recovery for the majority of clients, as it comes with severe symptoms.

Most rehab programs are not equipped to deal with withdrawal, so it is often in your best interest to go to detox. In fact, your program may require it.

If your care team recommends detox, it is best to attend. Otherwise, you may be more likely to relapse during or after your treatment program.

How Long is Detox?

Some detox programs last only a few days, while others take more than a week. Several factors may affect the length of your detox program, including your metabolism, physical health, type of drug and more.

People with slower metabolisms usually spend more time in detox. Likewise, if you are in poor health, you may need to remain under medical supervision for a longer period. Talk to your care team to determine how long detox is likely to take for you.
